Reserve Your Seat on the Bus for the 2010 Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup

This year's 2010 Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup will be November 4-7, 2010 at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louisville, Kentucky.

The state office sells extra bus seats for the trip to help defray trip expenses. If you are interested in one of these seats, please let me know ASAP so I can give your name to the state office to be put on the wait list. After September 29th, the state office will start selling all available bus seats.

Seats will be available on a first come, first served basis – we are taking the smaller bus and seating is limited! Any “youth guests” must supply their own adult chaperone and any 4-H youth must make reservations through your County Cooperative Extension/4-H office.

Bus transportation - $140 per seat

Room costs - per room per night prices (if you reserve with us) - add 15.01% room tax: Single - $105 Double - $105 Triple - $105 Quad - $105 (Rooms have 2 Queen beds)

NOTE: we will be staying in Lexington, KY this year on Thursday night at the Red Roof Inn (859-293-2626) – You must reserve a room through the state office – and we must pay for these rooms in advance!!

New York State Fair Horse Show Results

Congratulations to all our Clinton County riders who went to the NYS Fair! Abigail B. and Courtney B. rode in the Hunt Seat division and Caitlin K., Tamarra C., and Mandy C. rode in Gymkhana. Caitlin earned 5th in Texas-T-Barrels Pony and 7th in Barrel Keyhole Race Pony. Tamarra earned 2nd in Straight line Barrels Horse Senior. Mandy earned 8th in Straight line Barrels Pony, 6th in Texas-T-Barrels Pony, and 7th in Bleeding Heart Barrel Race Pony.

NY State Fair: Hippology Results

Congratulations to all our Clinton County 4-Hers who participated in State Hippology!

Rachel R., Olivia C., and Abby B., from Clinton County along with Mila D., from Essex County represented our region as the Junior team. Their team placed 8th in the contest. Congrats to Olivia who was 10th place junior individual!

Elaine D., from Clinton County and Emily W., from Essex County, represented our region in the Senior competition. Their teams placed 10th and 9th, respectively. Congratulations to Emily who was 6th place senior individual!

PS: as you finish your State Fair activities, please let me know how you've done so I can share it with our 4-H families. You usually get the results before I can. Thanks!

Horse Fun Day

CCE Franklin County 4-H is doing a very last minute Horse Fun Day during the Harvest Festival at the Malone fairgrounds on Sept 11 from 10-4. It's free and open to any 4H'er with a helmet, coggins/rabies and boots. We will be doing pleasure & Eq then all games the rest of the day. If you have attended in the past, you know how much fun Horse Leaders, Moms and Dads can be! If you haven’t been before, come join us for a day of learning, sharing, and the occasional saddle sore!

You may camp overnight for the Fun Show the next day. There will be a fee for a full water/power/sewer hookup but no charge for “roughing it”. There will be a bathroom open and stalls available. Please note that the power will not be on in the barn. BRING FLASHLIGHTS if you are staying the night to check on your horses. Water will be available.

Current Rabies and Coggins are required. Bring with you.

All Adult riders are required to wear a helmet.

4H Youth will need a “babysitter” as this is an Adult 4H Leader or Parent Only clinic. 4H youth are allowed to be on the grounds but Please make arrangements for someone to keep the kids amused while the adults are busy learning.

Registration is requested by SEPTEMBER 16th so we may plan on the amount of lunch to order!

4-H Fun Show

It’s time again for the 4-H Youth Fun Horse Show. The 4-H Fun Show will be Sunday, September 19, 2010. The show will start at 8 AM and be held at the Clinton County Fairgrounds.

The Fun Show includes English and Western Equitation and Pleasure classes, Trail, Mini, Jumping, Dressage, and Games. You don’t need a horse to participate; volunteer to help in the ring or show booth! Clinton County 4-Hers who work or show during the Fun Show earn a point for the 2010-2011 4-H year. There is a $10 entry fee per rider which includes all classes for the day. Please bring your own lunch. 4-Hers who bring horses need to submit a copy of their horse’s rabies and Coggins’ papers (if we don’t already have them), the entry fee, and the registration form to Donna Sorrell by September 15 to be entered to ride in the Fun Show.

Garbage is carry-in, carry-out. Thank you for helping us keep the Fairgrounds clean and well-maintained.

Rutgers Equine Science Center’s Equine Science 4 Kids!

A note from Karyn Malinowski, Ph.D., Director, Equine Science Center at Rutgers

One of the recent results of our efforts is the launch of the Rutgers Equine Science Center’s Equine Science 4 Kids!, a redesigned, interactive youth component now available on the center’s website, esc.rutgers.edu. The component features Lord Nelson, a 37-year old American Quarter horse, who served for 22 years on the campus mounted patrol, as the figurehead guiding youth through the revamped educational component.

The goal was to create an online classroom with Lord Nelson as the lead educator. Although the updated component features interactive elements and will include games, the primary focus is equine science specifically developed for youth ages 10-14 years. The youth component focuses on three modules: Healthcare and Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, and Horses & the Environment.

Visitors to Equine Science 4 Kids! have the opportunity to email their horse-related questions directly to “Lord Nelson”. All questions are answered in a timely manner. If Lord Nelson receives the same question repeatedly, the question will be added to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) feature that is available in each of the three modules.

Keeping current with technology, Lord Nelson also has a blog, “Holy Hoofprints!,” to share his thoughts and perspective with Equine Science 4 Kids visitors. His blog consists of “a day in the life of a horse” as it relates to science content. Visitors may also join Lord Nelson’s Fan Club to receive email notification of new content, blog entries, and interactive games as they are added to the youth component.

Essex County 4-H invites you to their upcoming horse clinic: Ground Skills and Training and Farrier Work

Essex County 4-H is having a horse clinic on Wednesday, July 7.

From 10 AM to 12 PM, the farrier, Joseph D’Auria, will present.

Starting at 1 PM, Nicki Frechette and her assistant will be teaching ground skills and making your own simple training equipment. She will be bringing a pony to train.

There will be a bring-your-own-lunch break in between the 2 presentations.

Smart Financial Planning Strategies for Horse Professionals – Recession Recovery is the First Step

On July 5, 2010, Equestrian Professional will begin a three-part seminar series on financial planning for horse professionals. This series will focus on what horse professionals can do to create a secure financial outlook for their businesses and their own financial future.

The recession has had a widespread effect on the equine industry -

The Problems -
Sales barns and breeders are supporting unsold inventory or are selling horses below cost. Show barns have reduced the number of shows they attend, are competing closer to home, and/or are bringing fewer customers on the road. Trainers and professional riders are implementing new strategies to attract and retain clients: i.e. leases and syndicates have gained popularity. Additionally, some trainers are moving into new markets, like selling online training programs. Boarding stables are dealing with more past due accounts and abandoned horses than ever before. Rescues are over burdened with unwanted horses and their donors are tapped out.

The Reactions -
Many horse business owners have dipped into their retirements and savings (or maxed out their credit) in order to weather the recession. Others have made significant (and successful) changes to their businesses, but are finding that they must now adjust their business model in order to make these changes more profitable. Still others are in a state of uncertainty – the recession may have presented them with an opportunity- for example, to purchase discounted real estate or invest in a special horse. However, they find themselves reluctant to make a commitment in the current economic climate.

Whether a business has taken a direct hit or only been marginally effected - the recession has created a tumultuous business climate and currently, most horse businesses are either financially unstable or in some stage of economic recovery.

The Solutions -
In order to properly address these needs, Equestrian Professional’s Smart Financial Planning Strategies for Horse Professionals will take a three-pronged approach. The first seminar we will address financial recovery and stability. The speaker will be successful farm manager, Pam Saul of Breslin & Young financial planners. The second seminar in the series will focus on asset and earnings protection. The speaker will be equine insurance expert, Reed Schroeder, who will cover insurance options for horse professionals. The third and final seminar in the series will focus on building for the future - financial planning and prosperity. The speaker will be investment manger, Marc Reisman, who will discuss retirement planning and investment options for horse professionals.

Class Addition to the County Fair Horse Show: Bleeding Heart Barrel Race

With the addition of the Bleeding Heart Barrel Race to the New York State Fair 4-H Horse Show class list, we will also be offering the race in our county fair gymkhana this year as a state fair qualifier. 4-H Horse Camp

This year's Tri-County 4-H Horse Camp will be May 21-23 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. For more information and a registration packet, visit our website.

The Lewis County Horse Advisory Committee is hosting a 4-H Invitational Horse Show. The show is open to all 4-H’ers to come and compete on Saturday, August 14th at the Lewis County Fairgrounds. The show will start at 9am. There will be high point and reserve high point awards, as well as an All Around Award given for the day. The judge will be Vicki Cole. There is a $25 fee for the day for Junior and Senior 4-Hers, but Cloverbuds are free.

Horse Tack Auction

Franklin County 4-H Horse Program is having a Tack Auction fundraiser on Sunday April 25 at St. Joseph's Elementary School Gym on Elm Street in Malone from 12 PM to 4 PM. New equipment will be provided by JP North including halters, buckets, manure forks, lead lines, gifts, summer sheets, saddle pads, harnesses for horses and minis, bridles, saddles, and more! 4-H Mounted Games

Fay's Fillies, an Essex County 4-H Club, has invited our 4-Hers to attend their Mounted Games practices. You can go to watch or ride. If you are interested in attending, please contact Fay to let her know (you can call the office for her number).

All their practices are held at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport, NY. To attend, please bring your horse's rabies certificate, negative Coggins form, and your evaluation card with your riding level (available from the office if you need an updated one). Juniors and Seniors are invited to ride; Cloverbuds can watch.

Horse Careers Camp- Unique Opportunity for serious horse lovers

Love Horses? Wish you could spend your life with horses? Join us for a fun-filled, exciting and information packed experience learning about Careers in the Equine Industry. The Equine Careers Camp is designed for 4-H youth involved in horse projects. It is a time to learn first-hand from the people currently making a living in the equine industry about the types of equine careers, jobs available, and training needed.

For the sixth year, Ontario County 4-H will be hosting the camp to be held June 4-5-6, 2010 at 4-H Camp Bristol Hills located near Canandaigua, NY. The program is targeted toward middle school youth who are thinking about equine career opportunities but is open to older youth who may have not yet decided on a career. Check-in will be Friday night, June 4th, starting at 6:00p.m. with time to get acquainted. The remaining evening will focus on horse careers with guest speakers.

New York State has over 150,000 horses and 9 racetracks. The equine industry alone provides 12,800 full-time opportunities in New York State. The career opportunities we plan to explore during the Careers in the Equine Industry camp include equine veterinarian, veterinary technicians, breeders, therapist, riding instructors, trainers, and barn managers. Other highlights of the 3-day camp experience will be trips to Equine Centers, Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Center, Arabian and Standardbred farms, a Thoroughbred breeding and foaling farm as well as a retail equestrian center.

Information and representatives from colleges with Equine Curriculums will also be presented. They will discuss entrance requirements and curriculum choices as well as internships offered. Come with lots of questions.

4-H horse lovers from around the state are encouraged to apply. Participants will be selected on their desire to expand their knowledge of the horse industry through an application process. Registration is open now, and, space is limited.

Cost for the 3- day camp is $75 including all meals, if registered by before May 21st. Cost after May 21st will be $85.

2010 NYS 4-H Horse Program Annual Memo

The “official” helmet for the NYS 4-H Horse Program for the year 2010 will be equine riding helmets with ASTM – 1163/SEI or ASTM – F – 1163-04a/ SEI certification.


“Proper equestrian footwear with a distinguishable heel” is required.


An approved helmet and equestrian footwear must be worn at all times at 4-H events when a rider is mounted on an equine, youth are riding in a vehicle being pulled by one or more equines, or youth are handling an equine


Please be aware that there will be no “Draft Horse” Division, “Donkey/Mule” Division, or “Western Dressage” classes at the 2010 NYS Fair 4-H Horse Show. Once again, there will be a “Mounted Games” Division being offered at this year’s State Fair 4-H Show, if there are enough entries.


New class added for 2010!! – Quadrille class will be a new addition to the Drill/Parade Division – the new class will be in the 2010 NYS 4-H Horse Show Rule Book. The Drill/Parade Chairperson will be teaching about this new class at the NYS 4-H Horse Program in-service to be held at Cornell in May. This new class will be offered at the 2010 NYS Fair 4-H Horse Show.
