Congratulations Naomi--Be Aware of Agriculture Contest Winner!

Cows, chickens, apples, grapes, milk, maple syrup, and other products of New York State’s agricultural industry are the subjects of the forty prizewinning paintings, posters, poems, and stories submitted by elementary students across New York in the twelfth annual New York Agriculture in the Classroom “Be Aware of New York Agriculture” contest.

Nearly 425 entries were sent on to the state level, representing hundreds more from county contests, schools, and home school families. The categories for the different grade levels – Pre-K though 6 - include artwork, slogans, poems, stories, essays, and posters that help students learn about the importance of agriculture to New York. Winners in each category receive prizes ranging from T-shirts to savings bonds, and the winning entries will be displayed at the New York State Fair in the Youth Building and on the New York Agriculture in the Classroom Website.

Members of Sigma Alpha, Cornell University’s professional agriculture sorority, judged the entries. Teacher guides and student WebQuests are available at the Ag in the Classroom website to help teachers make the contest both fun and educational.

Naomi wrote an essay for the New York Agriculture Story portion of the Be Aware of Agriculture Contest. For this, she had to write an original titled fact or fictional creative story related to New York agriculture in a positive way. To read her story and see other winners, visit the NY Ag in the Classroom page.

Great job Naomi!

Funky Nests in Funky Places

The "Funky Nests in Funky Places" environmental challenge is back! More than 600 of you sent in entries to this Celebrate Urban Birds contest last year. You found nests in hanging flower baskets, an old boot, a teacup, a coffee can--even on top of a clothespin, where a hummingbird built its tiny nest.

For the 2010 Funky Nests in Funky Places challenge, you may take photos, do a painting, write a story, or shoot a video showing a bird’s nest built in some out-of-the-way or out-of-this-world place.

We've had such fun with this challenge! The theme really struck a chord with people. You wouldn't believe how many showed us bird nests in barbecue grills, bathrooms, garden tools, and signs. We even had Tree Swallows nesting in a cannon!Prizes you could win this year include Kaytee bird feeders and seed, sound CDs, books, posters, nest boxes, and more. If you're one of the first 50 entrants, you'll receive a copy of the "Doves and Pigeons" poster by Julie Zickefoose. Selected images and videos will be posted on the Celebrate Urban Birds website. We'll also be creating a 2011 calendar using some of the best entries.

Email your entry to urbanbirds@cornell.edu:
1. Write "Funky Nests_Your First and Last Name_ Your City and State" in the subject line.
2. In the email, you MUST include your name, mailing address, and location where photos were taken.
3. Tell us why you submitted your entry to the Funky Nests in Funky Places contest.
4. Choose your best/favorite entry and send just that one, please!
5. Read the terms of agreement
6. Be careful around nesting birds. Read more about how to find nests and what to do once you know where birds are nesting.
7. If you agree to the terms above, send us your entry before July 1, 2010. Visit the Celebrate Urban Birds website for more information and to read the terms of agreement regarding all entries.

Hey, show us your funky nest!

The Creative Critters held a bake sale to benefit the Champlain Valley K9 Search and Rescue Team. The families were able to pull together and we were able to set up 2 tables at Wal-Mart, 1 at each end of the store. Members of the Search and Rescue Team joined us in our efforts. Visitors to the bake sale had the opportunity to enjoy some great treats and meet the dogs, Inka, Rider and Easton and their human handlers. The dogs were a big hit and they helped to increase business. We raised over $700 in 4 hours! It was a pleasure working with the Search and Rescue Team and we appreciate them joining us.
